SKY
2018
72 St (B, C)
New York City Transit
Intricate mosaic renderings of cloud-filled skies bring the outside underground in "SKY" by Yoko Ono. As passengers move through the 72 St station, messages of hope that appear to be handwritten float in the clouds as the perspective shifts in each artwork. The words Remember, Dream, or Imagine Peace punctuate the daily commute with a hopeful, reflective spirit. The transformation of photographs into mosaic sky paintings by Mosaika Art & Design uses subtle gradations in color and tone to create a visually striking station environment.
“I’m thrilled that my new work, 'SKY,' will be opening at the 72 St subway station just steps from my home and Strawberry Fields, which I created in memory of my late husband," Ono says. "It will bring the sky underground, so it’s always with us. I hope this will bring peace and joy to my fellow New Yorkers for many years to come.”
